Benjamin Franklin Mile Markers

While serving as the Assistant Postmaster General, Benjamin Franklin established these engraved stone markers to measure miles along the route from Boston to New York on what had at one time been a Native American footpath. Made of Connecticut sandstone and dating from 1767, nineteen Franklin milestones can be found along Routes 9 and 67 in the towns of Spencer, East Brookfield, North Brookfield, Brookfield, West Brookfield, and Warren, each numbered to represent their distance from Boston on the old Boston Post Road.West Brookfield MA 01585
